Book Description

From Our Own Correspondent is one of the worlds most popular programes. Heard internationally on the BBC World Service and in Britain on BBC Radio 4, it has an audience of millions and has won a string of awards. This book, containing many of the programmes best dispatches from the last fifty years, shows why FOOC, as it is affectionately known, has become such a well - known and much - loved institution.

Written by the BBCs army of correspondents and stringers around the world, it contains not only the observations of journalists covering the big news events of the day, but also their personal insights into how people around the world live their lives.

From the early years there are dispatches from the Soviet Union and about the Suez Crisis. As one correspondent hitches a ride on Nehrus funeral train in India, another chronicles the end of the Prague Spring. There are moments of fear after being locked up in the Congo and on a lighter note, an insight into the only BBC studio in the world equipped with a bidet. Stories from the modern era include those of the girl who fell victim to human traffickers in Moldova, the man who hid tapes from the Taliban and the correspondent who took part in a lager drinking contest with British holidaymakers in Majorca.

As BBC senior correspondent Fergal Keane puts it €˜FOOC is a programme which promotes story- telling rather than story-processing. It is quite simply the best programme we have in news.
