Book Description

Although the great French novelists of the last two centuries are widely read in America, there is a widespread notion that little of importance has happened in French literature since the heyday of Sartre, Camus, and the nouveau roman. Curious American readers seeking new, up-to-date information and analyses will find in Paths to Contemporary French Literature a stimulating and much-needed guide to the major currents of one of the worlds great literatures. This critical panorama of contemporary French literature introduces English-language readers to over fifty important writers and poets. Emphasizing authors who are admired by their peers (as opposed to those with overnight reputations), John Taylor offers a compelling insiders view.

Library Journal

In this great introduction to some 50 French writers and poets little known outside of France, Taylor (The Presence of Things Past; The World As It Is), winner of the Three Oaks Prize for Fiction, invites his readers on an interesting journey. They may choose one of six ""pathways,"" all of which lead them to short analytical sketches of these authors lives and their works. (These pathways constitute the six main subdivisions of the book.) If readers choose the pathway of ""Remembering Childhood,"" for example, they will encounter, among others, Helene Cixouss Ore les lettres de mon pere. If, on the other hand, they choose the pathway of ""Love and Loves Language,"" there they will find authors like Jude Stefan (La Crevaison) or Pierre Guyotat (Eden, Eden, Eden). Other pathways include authors adept in ""The Art of Strolling"" or authors who have undergone life-threatening experiences (""After Surviving""). Taylor successfully debunks the widely held belief that there have been no great contemporary authors writing in French in France since the heyday of Sartre and Camus. The book is accompanied by an extensive bibliography and is sure to appeal to all aficionados of contemporary French literature.-Bob Ivey, Univ. of Memphis Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information
