Book Description
India is the late eighteenth century was a strange mixture of two worlds. From the European-looking cities of Calcutta, Madras and Bombay the East India Company exercised control over only a relatively small portion of the country. Elsewhere, ancient ways of life continued as they had done for centuries. Rajahs and nawabs still ruled their own kingdoms with despotic power, jungles and mountains were as yet unconquered by roads and railways, and most Indians had never seen a European. No one will ever again experience that world, and the few visual records that remain from it are therefore of unique interest.
