Book Description
Saturday 1 November 1755 was All Saints` DAy, one of the most important festivals i the religious calendar. In Lisbon, Europe`s fourth largest city and the opulent metropolis of the great Portuguese empire, the day had dawned bright and warm. A few minutes after half past nine a terrible noise like the rattling of coaches on cobbles heralded one of the most devastating catastrophes ever to hit a major city ini the western world. The ten-minute duration of the Great Lisbon Earthquake has seldom been equalled. The largest of its three tremors measured 8.75-9 on the Ritchter scale. Two massive aftershocks followed as well as a huge tidal wave. The destruction was completed by a fire which burned for a week, consuming a larger area than the Great Fire of London. Most of the vast riches housed in Lisbon`s palaces, churches, and warehouses were lost.
