This ethnography is all about politics, raw, gut wrenching politics as it is practiced by scholarly gentlemen who are not generally thought to be politicians. As noted earlier, politics is concerned with how leaders use power to attain public and private goals. The politics with how leades use power to attain public and private goals. The politics of Poona University is concerned with how historical contradictions embedded in the University provoked 70 years of strife and conflict between leaders who developed and used political power to acquire control of university government. The reason for these politics is simple. Whoever controlled university government controlled the university. Indeed, the politics of Poona University is a microcosm of the politics related to governments in general. But the politics of the universitys agents is informative because it transpires in an unlikely place. Still, it would be helpful for the reader to know what i mean by the ideas involved in the university politics and why they are important. I use a dialectical methodology to make sense of the university politics. The essence of the dialectic as I use it argues that social systems, such as universities, are comprised of internal contradictions in social and cultural relations. Contradictions by their nature induce conflict between agents who represent the interests of the contradictory elements. The conflict in which they engage is aimed at resolving the contradiction in their favor. Since the idea of a contradiction is central to this work, it is worthwhile to consider it in more detail. The idea of a cotradiction refers to discrepancies, antagonisms, or oppositions in the relationship between entities within a social structure or institution, such as Poona University. The idea of a contradiction is important because attempts by human agents to resolve contradictory relations in a social system provide a major impetus for social and cultural change. However, contradictions tht engender change exist only when certain conditions exist. First, a relationship must exist between two or more entities. Second, the entities must be constituted by virtue of being integral featues of the structure. Third, the entities must be mutually interdependent. Finally the potential for conflict must exist by virtue of their relationship in the structure. The contradictions in Poona Universtiy were embedded in relations of caste, institution, and region.
