Book Description

"Belly Dance: The Teachers Book" is a didactic guide with exercises to facilitate the teaching of this dance. Throughout the years, the author has been comparing the diverse teaching styles of her dancing teachers with the didactic courses that she has been attending and her work as Secondary teacher. Therefore she extracted some ideas that she has put into practice in her job as a belly dance teacher. Willing to put in writing her conclusions and being helped by her educational knowledge, the author has decided to create this book with the hope that it will help women who, dancing well, wish to learn some of the didactic aspects of teaching. This book is also inspired by the didactic materials and resources that teachers of other subjects have access to but that they are not usually available for this particular discipline. The main aim is to facilitate the teaching to Eastern dance teachers. As she says "To be able to teach, mainly at low levels, it is not necessary to be a great dancer. Being able to dance at a higher level than the one you are going to teach is always more than enough. Above all, teaching is knowing how to transmit that knowledge, how to organize and to structure your lessons and how to motivate the students for them, once they connect with this dance, never to stop dancing". The author, Amaya Felices, mother of two young boys - Chemical engineer, with a First Degree in English Philology, teacher of Secondary Education and a fitness trainer- has been teaching the Belly dance since 2004 in her native city, Saragossa (Spain).

If you are interested in teaching belly dancing or know someone who may be, this surely is a good way to start doing it.

It is very easy to follow and the only requirement is knowing a little bit more than your students. You do not need any previous teaching knowledge.

I have found the structure quite easy to follow, with lots of good examples, differentiations for slow/fast learners and suggestions for teachers, and the author writes in a way that it is like she was talking to you directly. It starts in lesson 1, complete beginners, and has enough sessions for a whole year (once/twice a week, 1-2 hours).

Best of all, it has some handouts with the final choreography for each unit and also questionnaires for the students, so you can make photocopies of that bit and give it to the students for them to revise at home and to help you with the feedback.

I am sure you know how awful is to think you are doing well when you are not, because nobody tells you otherwise; or just the contrary, to leave a course after two lessons because the teacher is awful but you do not want to tell her/him openly.

All in all, this is a good book at a good price, with all the things you need and none of the "extra-bits-that-you-may-or-may-not-use-but-you-have-to-pay-for!"

I have also found out that the original version in Spanish is at [...]

If you decide to buy it I hope you find it as useful as I did.
