Book Description

Herds of musk oxen roam the treeless tundra of the Far North. Following closely are wolves, predators looking for a meal. The wolves are no match for the powerful adult musk oxen with their helmet-like horns. When the herd is threatened, the adults form a circle around their young to protect them. Musk oxen, with their long, thick hair, are built to survive the harsh arctic winters. But the wolves still watch the herd —for a calf that cant keep up or an old musk ox too weak to survive.

Editorial Reviews

In this book, a herd of musk oxen are followed and photographed for three years. The authors commitment to capturing the details of the musk oxen results in the readers ability to watch a young calf grow into a young adult bull as he progresses from sheltering from storms in his mothers shadow, to confronting wolves and controlling the herd. The narrative focuses on an individual animal while relating the story of the herd as a whole. The author captures the dangers, intensity, and harsh beauty of life in the far north. The language of the text is appropriate for the age level. Readers should note that the author does not gloss over the death and danger inherent in the Artic: one small and vulnerable calf is taken by wolves. While photographs do show the wolves chasing the herd, the actual death is described in text rather than pictures. This would be an excellent resource for children interested in Artic life or unusual animals. The "looking back" and "more information" sections contain useful information for educators. Overall, this book is an excellent resource whose text is only surpassed by the vivid photographs of the musk oxen.
