Publishers Weekly

The manager of a seaside hotel finally notices a boy who was discovered in an empty room of the Grand as a baby. In a starred review, PW called it "a sparkling debut," likening it to Hilary McKays books set at the beach. Ages 7-12. (May) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Susie Wilde - Childrens Literature

Toby was left as a baby at The Grand, a hotel by the sea. As he has grown, he has become the near-slave of Mr. Harris, the devious, money-hungry manager. When Toby meets Eliza Flot and her mermaid family one night, everything changes. To protect the mermaid familys identity, Toby comes up with a plan for them to become guests at the hotel, trundling them and their treasure chests into their rooms with wheelchairs. Toby soon finds that his life changes, and so do the lives of all who live in the hotel. The depressed owner, Margot, gets out of bed to become part of the intrigue. The joyful mermaid family transform the dismal hotel into a place of fun. All the time there lingers the mystery about Tobys mysterious appearance and the disappearance of the treasure of the Duke of Dudley. Yes, this book is predictable, but the bouncy, light-hearted writing and mermaid fantasy make it a reading journey well worth taking. Period illustrations by Bailey match the storys romping tone. 2004, Scholastic, Ages 7 to 10.
