In 1786 the carriage painter thomas daniell landed in india with his nephew william. Their intention was to find subjects that would attract the british public of the day, which was greedy for exotic images and distant adventures, and their three voyages, armed with a camera obscura, took them to the most remote parts of the country. they executed a substantial number of sketches, with the greatest possible accuracy, which were then worked up in detail as engravings, oil paintings and aquatints.
