Editorial Reviews

Porcupines have always been such interesting animals and Sandra Markles Porcupines in "Lerners Animal Prey" series is no exception. Though its size could be detrimental to its health as an animal of prey, a predator would have to find a way to reach its unprotected stomach without getting stabbed by its quills to have a porcupine as a tasty meal. This is a truly unique animal. The cover photograph grabs the reader with its beauty and tenderness, and the detailed pictures of quills, teeth, and nails woven within the story line are especially interesting. Porcupines may be pokey on the ground, but they dont have to be fast to escape the dangers of a predator. The description of these animals is well explained by comparison to medium-sized dogs so that the reader can picture them. It is also interesting to find that a porcupines teeth wear down from chewing tree bark and branches, yet the teeth continue to grow. A reader will have no trouble understanding the important information about these creatures. Plus there are a list of books, a glossary, and some added facts on the final pages.
