Book Description
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. First edition. When the British arrived in Singapore in 1819 it was to set up the most eastern outpost of the British East India Company. So the Indian community, though never a majority, has played a significant role as clerks labourers and merchants from the earliest times to providing two Presidents during Singapore's history since independence. Nair, an expert in Indian diaspora studies, in this history notes Indians integral part in the city's growth, but does not forget the Indian role in both world wars when elements were part of the two most serious challenges to British rule there. Very Good Hardback in a Near Fine Dust Jacket First Edition. Signed 325 pages with a bibliography and index. Weight 0.7kg. Post free within Malaysia The dust jacket looks new apart from a small wrinkle at the top of the spine. There are faint signs of damp on the inside covers and opposite page in each case. There is a dedication signed by the author on a front end paper. Otherwise the binding is tight, the text clear and there is no tanning of the pages.
